North Fork Skokomish River

Garry and I planned this trip for today hoping that the weather would not disappoint us.  I am happy to say that the weather was perfect.  When we started up out of the Skokomish Valley we entered a world of sunshine.  We could look back and see the valley fog starting to burn off.

It took a few minutes to load our stuff into one vehicle, and then we were headed up the road and into the Olympic National Forest.  The North Fork Skokomish River is the location of some spectacular orbicular jasper.  The orbs come in a variety of colors, but the most common is red.  Today we found a few pieces of this fine material.  The biggest one was probably a 25 pound piece that we decided to leave behind.

25 pounds of beauty.

25 pounds of beauty.

The access to the river is a 1 mile hike down hill, and 25 pounds more in a full pack was not very appealing.

We did bring out more than 20 pounds of nice jasper, and a few smaller pieces of orbicular material.

The day turned out beautiful and the fall colors were outstanding.  Garry and I both had on new hip waders with felt soles.  These boots kept us from slipping on the wet rocks of the river bottom, and allowed us to check out quite a bit of area that was under water.

There were many downed trees that had been washed loose from their footing in the banks of the river.  Some of them were quite large and would have made a logger cry.

We also saw evidence of quite a few different species of wild life.  Including the tracks of a cougar.

The evidence of danger.
