Did You Believe That Location Tip?

Jerry and I talked with a Wheyerhaeuser employee who told us where he had found agate and petrified wood.  Today I decided to check out one of the areas he told us about.  I had to spend a little time looking at maps to locate the exact area, but once I found the spot I headed out early in the morning and parked as near as I could get.

I decided to hike the short distance to the creek and then hike up the creek checking for agate and petrified wood.  I figured that if there was material in the creek there would be material in the ground.  It didn’t take me long to come to my first obstacle.  A medium sized waterfall.

I crawled up the bank and back down to the creek where I found solid bedrock.  Absolutely no gravel at all.  Things were not looking to promising, and I almost decide to head back to the truck.  I decided to keep going and soon found my first piece of material.  It looked like a large piece of quartzite.

I didn’t want to haul it around with me so I chipped off a small piece.  This would give me something to polish and determine whether it would be worth going back for.

This creek was really quite scenic, and I was really enjoying my self.  There didn’t seem to be to many log jams and other brush to contend with and the water was never very deep.

I was not finding very many agates, and very few pieces of petrified wood.  I plodded on up the creek and was rewarded for my efforts by my first agate.  It was a golf ball sized piece with nice banding.  My moral climbed after this find and soon I was finding quite a bit of petrified wood and a few more agates.

I also found a unique shaped mushroom.  I don’t know anything about mushrooms, so I just took this picture and left it there.

I hiked on and eventually came to a small side creek.  It was getting time to head back to the truck so I followed this creek to the closest logging road and hiked back to the truck.

Here are two pictures of the material I found in the four hours hiking this creek.

I think I ended up with some nice material to complement a wonderful day outdoors.

Thanks for joining me.

The mushroom is an Oyster mushroon,,,,,,,,,very good to eat. Also, very early in the season to find them, but global warming is working…for us at least.

    Woody:

Thanks for the identification. Maybe I should become more informed concerning mushrooms.
