Dean C. Dean N. and myself prepared ourselves for a wet day and headed down to the Toutle area to do a little Rockhounding. The weather forecast was for rain, so we got our rain gear ready our boots on and headed out the door at 7:00am.
We arrived at the parking area for the first spot a little after 8:00am and headed through the woods to a small creek.
Dean and Dean.
I have found some nice petrified wood in this creek in the past, so we were anticipating more finds. Luck would have it that it had rained so hard the day before that the creek was flowing high and muddy. We were able to find some smaller pieces of agate and wood, but the finds were pure lucky.
We quit this spot and headed to our next destination. Parking here and getting the mountain bikes out, we started pedalling up the hill.
It only took us 20 minutes to pedal to our destination, and then we headed into the woods to locate some agate and petrified wood.
We were finding some nice material, when Dean (you can guess which one) purloined my camera and snapped a quick picture of me. I don’t usually get caught actually digging since I am the author of these reports.
We spent a couple of hours digging in various locations near here and ended up finding some nice petrified wood and carnelian.
Dean N found the best material of the day, when he un-earthed a large chunk of petrified wood.
This piece was a quarter round and had some fantastic colors. Dean N also found some nice pieces of carnelian near this big piece of wood.
Dean C and myself had to settle for smaller pieces of material, but we were both happy with our finds and the weather turned out perfect. No rain, cool temperatures, and sun in the afternoon.
I couldn’t have planned for a better day to start rockhounding in this new year.
Thanks for joining us.
