In Between!

Rain Monday and Tuesday. ?Supposed to rain Thursday and Friday. ?I decided that if I wanted to keep dry while doing a little rockkounding, I would have to do it “in between” those four days.

Cloudy sky

The view from the top of the mountain.

At ?9:00am I headed for Capitol Forest and a gravel pit ?I heard had some nice quartz pockets with an occasional zeolite pocket. ?Fortunately I only live about 30 minutes from the pit, so it didn’t take me long to reach my destination and start searching.

Gravel Pit

A lot of shooting goes on at this place.

I hadn’t planned on spending a lot of time here, especially since I couldn’t find my crack hammer and chisels. ?So I just wandered around the edge of the pit and used my rock hammer to break open a few boulders. ?There appears to be quite a few rocks with quartz pockets in them, but all the ones I found were quite small. ?I did find one pocket that looked like it would be about 2″ in diameter, but it was on the wall of the pit and I wasn’t anxious to get my head bashed in by working on what appeared to be a very unstable surface.

Here is what I did bring home.

Crystals

The entire batch.

Zeolite

A small cluster of zeolites.

Calcite

Nice yellow calcite crystal.

Zeolite

These sprays of zeolites are quite delicate.

A couple of these small thumbnail sized pieces had some really nice zeolite sprays, radiating off of the quartz. ?I ended up leaving around noon, but I can see that this spot will require some more time in the future.

Thanks for joining me.
