Panterra
Waypoint Software
This month we are going to review a software program instead of a map.
This is because GPS units are becoming so popular.
I recently downloaded a program from
(click on this link to go to their site) that gives you access to thousands
of locations to input into your GPS unit. The Demo version allows
you to download and access locations for only one state, but it gives you
a good idea of what is availalbe in the full version.
The database used for the waypoints looks like the USGS GNIS database
with considerable enhancements that allow for ease of use. You can download
any of the waypoints to a GPS unit or combine waypoints into routes and
then download the routes. The program shows route leg information
such as distance between waypoints, bearing between waypoints, total distance
of the route, and grade and speed of route when hooked up to a GPS.
The version I tested only had options for Garmin and Magellan GPS units.
There is an extensive search function that allows searching on
location name, map name, elevation, or distance from active waypoint.
You can even add your own waypoints or import them from your GPS unit.
One of the things I liked about this program was its ability to display
a distance from a chosen location to any other location in the database.
However, I was disappointed that a lot of the functions were tied to the
internet and if you did not want to be connected to the internet all the
time some of its funtionality is missing. The other problem I had
was trying to install and run on my laptop. I have an older laptop
that does not have internet access. I kept getting an error saying
that a required .dll file was missing. Maybe this was not internet
related but it keeps me from running Panterra on my laptop which is the
one I use on the road with my GPS.
I think that TopoGrafix
really has a good idea going here and I would definitely recommend this
program for those with GPS units or for those that want to know the distance
between locations in their area.

Gordan
Peak Trail #3387
(Description taken from 50 Old-Growth Hikes by John and Diane Cissel)
This trail provides access to the Middle Santiam Wilderness through
a long stretch of commendable old forest. The upper part of the trail
goes in and out of mixed-forest leave blocks and plantations. However,
less that a mile southwest of the Rd 1152 trailhead, the trail enters and
remains in old growth for three miles as it heads down the northwest slope
of Gordan Peak. Huge Douglas-firs oversee the grove accompanied by
large western hemlocks higher up the trail, and stately western red cedars
lower down. The trail leaves the old growth and enters a large plantation
before joining the Chimney Peak Trail inside the Wilderness.
Maps that cover this trail are: 50 Old-Growth Hikes in the Willamette
National Forest.
