ROAD CLOSURES

The Forest Service has closed several roads in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest just before Modern Rifle season opens this year. The roads had all been officially closed previously but the gates have been broken. These gates have been repaired and are now locked. The roads affected are: Forest Roads 9327, 9327.040 in the Wright Meadows area; Forest Road 2551 off of Forest Road 25; Forest Road 8303.340 above the Ape Caves; Forest Road 9388 by Alec Creek; and Forest Road 9035 in the Curly Creek area.

In addition to the above roads the Forest Service has been awarding bids to decommission other Forest Roads throughout the Forest. We will be listing those closures and other information that affect maps throughout the area in future NEWSLETTERS.

PLACES OF INTEREST

Sheep Mountain Yukon Territory British Columbia

For a truly great photo safari in which you can get very close to Dahl Sheep in their native habitat I would recommend that you take a trip to Sheep Mountain.

Photos such as these can be taken by amateur photographers with a little work and luck.

Sheep Mountain is located on the Alaska Highway between Haines Junction and Beaver Creek. Nestled next to beautiful Kluane Lake, the mountain is south facing and the semi constant winds keep much of the ground snow free all winter long, allowing the sheep to feed. The sheep like this area and there seems to always be some sheep around.

We went there during the first week of June. The ewes had just lambed and we saw a number of lambs next to their mothers. We followed a short gravel road to a parking area and then walked less than a mile where we were rewarded with the sight of five large Rams feeding up the hill side. They did not seem to mind our presence and we were able to get quite close. We also noticed another group of sheep further on that contained some Rams but time did not allow us to approach them.
