CONCERNS
AFFECTING WILDLIFE
Blacktail Deer Hair
Loss
(The following
is taken from an article dated 10/28/99 by Allen Thomas, The Columbian
outdoor writer)
Blacktail Deer Hair loss was first noticed in 1996 in the Snoqualmie
area. It has spread throughout the western part of Washington and
has moved south into the Willamette Valley. In its early stages,
the syndrome causes whitish to yellow discolorations over the rib cage,
flanks, rump and neck, with hair loss occurring in those areas as the condition
worsens. Animals who survived the condition last spring now show
a healthy coat.
Hunters need not have any concern regarding the meat quality of the
deer. The underlying problem is believed to be a muscle worm known
as Parelaphostongylus. The parasite lays eggs into the blood stream
which are filtered out in the very small capillaries of the lungs.
The eggs hatch in the lung producing a larva which grows in the hair sacs
creating a small zone of inflammation.
These larvae causes a low grade of pneumonia subjecting the deer to
immune suppression, which increases lice numbers dramatically. Pathologists
feel that the hair loss is caused by a hypersensitivity reaction in the
skin which causes the deer to constantly rub and lick. It is still
uncertain whether the hypersensitivity reaction is due to the lice or the
lung larva.
