FEATURED MAP
National Geographic: Washington digital maps

A 7-DC set of all the USGS 1:24000, 1:100000, and 1:500000 scale maps for the State of Washington.
GPS ready, seamless statewide coverage, enhanced with 3D digital shading, professional photo quality output.

I have been using this program for the last couple of weeks and find it useful and easy to work with.  Adding waypoints to my maps was easy.  There are three different ways to add waypoints to a map; direct from a GPS unit, imported from a text file, and importing from Windows clipboard.  Transferring the waypoints to and from my GARMIN GPS was simple with the use of a Windows wizard to walk through the steps.  There are three different types of GPS units supported including the NMEA standard; Garmin, Magellan, and Eagle/Lowrance.

The maps are the standard USGS maps with the added option of displaying them with relief shading.  This option makes the maps look quite a bit better, and I leave this option on all the time.

I would rather be able to go directly to the 1:24000 scale maps instead of having to step down through the 5 different levels to reach the most detailed of the maps, but this is just a minor irritation.

Over all I think this is a good map product and would compliment any ones GPS.

HIKE OF THE MONTH
Riverside Trail

(Description taken from 50 Old-Growth Hikes by John and Diane Cissel)

To reach this trail turn right into the trailhead parking area in Rainbow Camp Ground off of Rd. 46, 1/2 mile past the Ripplebrook Ranger Station (25 3/4 mi. SE of Estacada).  another 3 mi. on Rd. 46 will get you to the other trailhead at Riverside Camp Ground.

This National Recreation Trail (#715) can be hiked from either end, for any length, in any season, and can be enjoyed by all.  The two finest old-growth groves are located at opposite ends of the trail.  Both groves boast Douglas-firs and western red cedars 4-5' thick, with occasional old-timers reaching even greater dimensions.  Unique views of Clackamas River open up from the top of steep banks along the northern portion of the hike, and in the fall spawning steelhead splash and churn the river in an annual ritual of regeneration.

Maps that cover this trail are:  50 Old-Growth Day Hikes in the Mt. Hood National Forest.
