FEATURED MAP
All Topo Maps: Washington

This 6-DC set of all the USGS 1:24000, 1:100000, and 1:250000 scale maps for the State of Washington comes with viewing software - seaming & exporting tools - GPS interface.

IGage Mapping Corporation's latest full state coverage includes high resolution, color images of all the USGS topographic maps for the State.  Professional users, hunters, pilots and recreational users will enjoy instant access to all of these topo maps.

The Program also includes the following excellent tools:
ALL TOPO MAP VIEWER
Use the All topo viewer to quickly find view, annotate, print and export the maps you need .  Search by Place, feature, Township/Range or map name;  400+ levels of high-resolution zoom; easily export royalty free images and print portions or entire maps.
GPS TOOL - transfer coordinates between the maps and your GPS receiver
The All Topo Maps: GPS tool transfers waypoints, routepoints and trackpoints between your GPS and PC over the serial port.  Mark waypoints on maps for transfer to your GPS or use your GPS to mark coordinates in the field and extract them onto the maps.  Real-Time-Tracking plots your position as you travel.  GPS tool will help you organize your coordinates.
BIG TOPO MAP seaming tool
Big Topo quickly seams adjacent 71/2 minute scale quadrangles together, removing collars and generating large area coverage maps.  Big Topo maps can be exported (royalty free!) with georeferenced world-files for use with GIS and CAD applications.  Build huge, full resolution topographic maps that completely cover your trip or project's area.

I have been playing with this program for the last couple of weeks and find it useful and easy to work with.  There was a little bit of a learning curve while I found out the best way to add waypoints to my maps, but transferring the waypoints to and from my GARMIN GPS was simple and could even be done without the Map Viewer installed.

The Big Topo Seaming tool worked quickly and produced seamless maps across multiple 71/2 " maps.  Printing worked fine on my Epson 850 and HP DesignJet 650C plotter.  I found the quality of the printed map to be marginal at 300 DPI on my 650C but acceptable at 720 DPI on my Epson.

I think the reason these maps are royalty free is because they are the USGS 71/2" DRG obtained from the government, however the added functionality added by IGage made the price well worth it.

HIKE OF THE MONTH
Herman Camp Loop

(Description taken from 50 Old-Growth Hikes by John and Diane Cissel)

To reach this trail turn off of I-84(Corbett exit #22) 13mi. E of I-84/I-205 jct.  Proceed E. through town and cross the I-84 entrance ramp 13/4 mi.  Go straight at the stop sign and head east parallel to I-84.  Turn right (S.) onto the Herman Ck. CG access rd. after 1/12 mi.  Parking lot is 1.4 mi. further.

This hike is about 8 miles long and of moderate difficulty.  It loops through two groves of old Douglas fir and offers scenic views of the Columbia Gorge and Herman Creek basin.

Follow the Herman Creek Trail(#406) uphill until reaching Herman Camp after 11/4 mi.  Turn left onto the Gorton Creek Trail(#408) at Herman Camp.  The next mile passes through small concentrations of old Douglas firs and scattered big trees, but the best old growth in the area greets you after rounding the nose of the main ridge.  The dense deciduous understory ( vine maple, big leaf maple, red alder, and California hazel) lends additional color in the fall.  Turn right onto the Ridge Cutoff Trail(#437) just before the four mile point, and a half-mile later turn right again onto the Nick Eaton Way Trail(#447).  Exposed slopes on the upper portions of this segment offer expansive views.  Continue switch backing steeply downhill entering an interesting , "young" old-growth stand.  Although Douglas fir in this grove are three to five feet thick, tree crowns are generally intact and growing well, there is little dead wood, and the bark looks relatively young.  Of course it's all relative; "young" could easily be 200 or more years old!  turn right, back onto the Herman Creek Trail and return downhill to the trail head.

Maps that cover this trail are:  50 Old-Growth Day Hikes in the Mt. Hood National Forest.
